“You never get a second chance to make a first impression.”  This cliché is never more important than when you are heading to a job interview.

When you are invited to an interview you need to consider that your first impression is going to weight heavily on the person who is interviewing you. If you make a great first impression then you can bet the interviewer is going to use the meeting to try and justify why you should be working for their company. Likewise, of you make a poor first impression you should know that in the back of their mind they are looking for reasons why they shouldn’t hire you.

Many companies and HR departments are now using software to scan the resumes they receive. Therefore, you need to make sure that your resume includes the words that the scanners are looking for. Otherwise you may be passed over in the prescreening process, even if you are the ideal candidate.

As a company that hosts a niche B2B Sales Professionals job board we get a lot of resumes. Some are for specific sales jobs we have posted on our website and others are from people who are want to become part of our database for future job opportunities.

Yet many people, who send in a resume just open their email program, add our email address and attach the resume file. No name on the resume file, just “resume”. No contact information, no note saying they are responding to our ad or anything else that tells me they are a legitimate candidate.

In a world of spam, viruses and garbage attacking our “in boxes” every hour of every day you must take a minute to communicate with the person who is doing the recruiting.

No information means junk mail and no chance at a job. If you are applying for a sales job the recruiter is judging you not only on your resume but your introductory email. Face it if you can’t sell yourself in the email, the company recruiter is most likely thinking you will have the same poor approach to selling their products.

Is it a resume or a virus?

Each week tens of thousands of people apply to companies on line and many are never considered serious candidates because of one simple mistake. They send an email that does not include any information other than their attached resume.

A recent 6 month study conducted by an independent research group found that job seekers who apply to on line ads with both a resume and cover letter are 5 times more successful in landing interviews when compared to candidates who only include a resume.

So if you want to improve your odds of landing the interview make sure you include a cover letter with every resume.

Technology is creating a new generation of teens and adults who believe the only effective communication is Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, & text messages.

I will be the first to admit you need to know how to use these technologies if you want to grow your business  but even major online social forums are incorporating the use of “in person” networking events because of the advantages and power of  in face to face communication.

There is a growing movement in small and mid-sized Canadian companies that are searching for ways to connect with recently retired or semi retired business professionals. They are in need of people who can provide knowledge and experience in areas their own management team is lacking.

Twice a year we hear from sales people who say “it’s summer time no use in job hunting now”. The same thing happens at year end.  We regularly hear “no one ever hires in November or December so why should I be looking now?”

Companies are always looking and yes the numbers will drop in the summer and at the end of year but this provides serious job searchers with an advantage. If the number of people actively looking drops during this time then the number of competitors for that job has also dropped.  This provides a great opportunity for job seekers who keep looking.

Many companies hire in the New Year and the smart ones are gathering resumes and candidate profiles right now so they will be ready to hit the ground running when they are ready to start the hiring process.

Over the years I have seen hundreds, maybe even thousands of resumes and I continue to review resumes every day.  Based on this experience, I can state that many applicants do nothing to help themselves gain employment.  In fact, in many cases, it did the exact opposite!  The amazing thing is that the reasons why their resumes did not help were completely preventable! I received this note from a friend & business associate who is currently hunting for a new senior sales management position. Karen wrote this after attending a networking meeting for job seekers a few years ago and coming away with the impression that many people believe all you have to do is give your resume to a headhunter and leave the rest of the task up to them.  She provided this information to the networking group message board and sent a copy to me thinking it might help other job seekers. Karen focuses on how important it is for you to keep control over both the recruiter and the job search function. (more…)
